<h2 id="e6c01d1a-707c-4dda-b779-1abe57be104c" data-toc-id="e6c01d1a-707c-4dda-b779-1abe57be104c" class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;"><strong>If you wanted to build a system guaranteed to produce broke, anxious coaches who can't explain what they do, you'd build exactly what's being sold right now as coach training.</strong></h2><hr><h2 id="ae1931a8-a2c4-4fff-986f-823f7eed89fd" data-toc-id="ae1931a8-a2c4-4fff-986f-823f7eed89fd" class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;"><strong>The Life Coaching Definition of "Coaching" Will Create Business Failure</strong></h2><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">If you are life coach trained, there is a good chance you were taught that coaching is partnering with someone in a thought-provoking process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential. That is a great way to explain the&nbsp;‘technique’ you have been taught, but it is not the definition of coaching. The ICF does not own that definition.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.coachtrainingcampus.com/blog/what-is-your-definition-of-coaching/"> In fact, no one does.</a></p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">The real issue is this definition held tightly will ensure your business downfall. I don’t say that lightly, it is a fact.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">The definition that over a decade of research consistently shows is held by top-performing coaches is simpler and more honest: <strong>coaching is using all of your expertise and skill to support a client to get great results.</strong> That means bringing everything to the table, your skills, your knowledge, your experience, your instincts, whatever actually serves the client.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">That difference between definitions is the difference between a coaching business that works and one that doesn't. It also raises a question the narrow definition can no longer answer : if coaching is just asking thought-provoking questions, why wouldn't your client use AI? </p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">AI can ask great questions, facilitate reflection, is available at midnight, doesn't charge by the hour, and never has a bad day. If that is all coaching is, the profession has just been automated.</p><img src="https://ezycourse.b-cdn.net/838/cmra5gag9kwlacdpl3xmdgr5u.png" alt="image" containerstyle="position: relative; width: 750px; height: auto; cursor: pointer;" wrapperstyle="display: flex;"><hr><h2 id="c8996511-dba5-4198-ba4c-277babb7bfb0" data-toc-id="c8996511-dba5-4198-ba4c-277babb7bfb0" class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;"><strong>SMART Goals Are the Wrong Tool for Transformational Work</strong></h2><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">The problem runs deeper than the definition, because what you were taught to measure is just as broken as what you were taught to do.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">Most coaches are trained in SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. It sounds rigorous. The original SMART goal research was never intended for transformation work. The researchers who developed it explicitly noted it does not account for emotion, identity, or motivation, yet those three things are precisely what coaching is about.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">When coaches default to SMART goals, clients feel pinned down rather than inspired. Progress that is real and significant becomes invisible because it does not fit the framework. Clients reach the end of a coaching relationship feeling they did not achieve what they came for, even when they have made profound shifts in how they think, how they show up, and how they experience their lives.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">Meaningful progress in transformational work shows up across four dimensions: what people do differently, how they feel, what they can now see or access that they couldn't before, and how the world around them is responding to the changes they are making. None of those fit inside a SMART goal.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">This is also why the language most new coaches use to describe their work falls flat. You got a real result for someone, then told the next prospect you help people release deep-seated patterns and reconnect with their authentic self. What she actually needed to hear was that she would stop lying awake at midnight rehearsing the conversation she was too scared to have. You used your language instead of hers, and she didn't buy. The language that sells your coaching is sitting inside the conversations you have already had, the exact words your clients use to describe what shifted and what is different now. The distance between how a client describes their life at the beginning of working with you and how they describe it at the end is your marketing. A client would cry, have a breakthrough, or tell you it was the best conversation they had in years. Then they wouldn't book again, and you'd wonder what you did wrong. Single sessions are great for motivation, inspiration or to get someone into action but single sessions do not create results!</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">Over a decade of research has revealed a consistent pattern. Clients who achieved genuine transformation, who shifted beliefs that had held them back for years and created real change in their lives, often described their coaching as not that valuable. The reason is simple: nobody had shown them how far they had come. When you work session by session there is no thread, no tracking, and no before-and-after to point to. The client walks away with no visible evidence of the result, cannot tell anyone what it was worth, and often doesn't come back.</p><hr><h2 id="5ef36707-f16c-44c9-90d2-f164625a7d8d" data-toc-id="5ef36707-f16c-44c9-90d2-f164625a7d8d" class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;"><strong>A Package Is Not a Bundle of Sessions</strong></h2><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">Most new coaches, when they start thinking about packages, think about selling a group of sessions at a discount. Ten sessions for the price of eight. That is not a package. That is a bundle, and it devalues the work in the same way a clearance sale devalues a product. It also does nothing to solve the problem of demonstrating and tracking results.</p><img src="https://ezycourse.b-cdn.net/838/cmra7998km6i395qsfwuodcg0.png" alt="image" containerstyle="position: relative; width: 679px; height: auto; cursor: pointer;" wrapperstyle="display: flex;"><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">A high-value coaching package is a designed journey with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It takes someone from where they are now to a specific result they care about, through a structured process that makes progress visible the whole way through. The structure that research shows works consistently follows four phases: Get Ready, a professional onboarding experience that 90% of coaches skip; Get Set, a deep-dive intake process that shapes everything that follows; Grow, the main body of the coaching relationship with structured progress tracking across all four dimensions; and Glow, a final session designed specifically to help the client see and name how far they have come.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">That last phase is the one coaches most often skip, and it most directly determines whether a client re-signs or simply drifts away. Moving to this kind of package is not primarily about charging more, although it does create that reality. So you sat alone with a worksheet, answering questions about her age, her income, her relationship status, guessing your way into an answer that should have come from a year of real conversations. You typed something that sounded confident on the page and felt like a stranger the moment you tried to say it to a real person.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">Marketers teach the sequence as: pick a niche, build an offer, get clients. The sequence that actually works is the reverse. Coach people, notice what results you create and what problems keep showing up, then let your niche emerge from that evidence. When a guessed niche doesn't convert, most coaches conclude they are bad at marketing or not cut out for this. The actual signal was sitting right there the whole time, which problems clients kept bringing, which results landed hardest, which conversations kept repeating. Nobody told you to look at that.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">The goal in the early stage of your coaching career is to coach, observe, and track. What problems do your clients bring? What shifts do you notice? What do they say changed? That pattern, observed across real conversations, is what tells you where to focus. The fifteen years managing teams, nursing, running a business, or raising kids through something hard stopped counting the moment you became a coach, because the one thing you were told you are not allowed to do is advise. So you sat across from a client who needed exactly what you already knew and held your tongue, because that was what you had been trained to call professional.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">This was always a damaging myth. Right now it is also a business-ending one.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">AI can ask great questions, facilitate reflection, offer frameworks, and hold a client accountable at midnight without charging by the hour. If coaching is nothing more than a thought-provoking conversation, that conversation is now available for free. The coaches relying on technique alone, on being non-directive and holding space, have no answer to that.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">The coaches who will thrive bring something AI fundamentally cannot manufacture: lived experience, unique expertise, and the kind of judgment that only comes from having actually navigated what the client is navigating. That is the only edge that matters right now, and it cannot be copied, automated, or replaced.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">Your prior experience is your competitive advantage. The decades in leadership, health, education, business, or whatever field shaped you, this is the moment to stop apologising for that and start building your entire practice around it. Coaching technique is just that, one technique. The problem is reaching for marketing before there is anything solid to market. Content gets created before understanding what results you create. Websites get built before you can explain what you do in a sentence. Ads get run before there is a single case study. A niche gets picked on a worksheet before one real client has confirmed it works.</p><p class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal">Marketing amplifies what is already there. When what is there is unclear, unproven, and underpriced, marketing just makes that louder and more expensive. The coaches who build real businesses win because they got the foundations right first, they understood their results, built packages with visible structure, collected their clients' language, and stopped giving the work away before they had evidence of its value.
