The Big Marketing Lie

One of the more persistent lies in the coaching world is that the reason so many coaches are failing is because they haven’t marketed themselves properly. This is not true.

If marketing were the real issue, we would have seen results by now. Coaches are spending thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, on branding experts, funnel systems, websites, marketing courses, consultants and tech platforms. They follow every formula and still come away with no meaningful business, no sustainable clients, and no real confidence in their work. They feel like fakes and frauds, and their confidence actually decreases as a result.

What’s The Truth?

What’s actually going on is more uncomfortable. Most coaches don’t have a clear grasp of what their real expertise is, what they actually bring to the table that produces value.

They’ve never been taught how to structure their expertise, communicate it, and turn it into a meaningful offer and they’ve certainly never been shown how to express it with the kind of clarity that earns attention, respect, or payment. This lack of clarity is misdiagnosed as a marketing or visibility issue but you can’t market what you can’t communicate. That’s the part no one wants to say out loud because the industry thrives on confusion.

It’s easier to sell tactics to someone who’s lost their footing. Confused coaches are profitable.

We’ve spoken to more than a few marketing consultants who admit, off the record, that the reason coaches aren’t getting results from their work is because the coaches don’t know what they’re selling. Their expertise is vague, their value undefined, their messaging weak. Yet they still take on coaches knowing this, for obvious reasons.

So coaches continue signing up for marketing programs and tech before they’ve done the foundational work and the marketing industry carries on profitable, unbothered, and silent.
